Our Roots: Forest First, Craft Follows

The story of Dry Fall begins in the early 1980s, when Diego—a pioneer of Auroville’s Green Belt—started crafting with timber as a way to live lightly within the forest he was helping rewild. Back then, the land was dry and degraded, but with time, care, and a massive afforestation effort, it began to breathe again. The Dry Tropical Evergreen Forests slowly returned, and with them, a quiet tradition of forest-based living and making.

Out of this landscape, Forest Carpentry was born—not as an industry, but as a way of life. It began with simple, hand-built structures, made from trees that had naturally fallen. Slowly, a workshop took shape. A windmill was built. Tools were passed from hand to hand. And over time, Diego’s one-man craft evolved into a skilled, local team shaping homes, furniture, and community spaces from the forest itself.

Dry Fall: A New Beginning (2021)

In 2021, Mani founded Dry Fall to carry this deep-rooted craft tradition into the future. What began decades ago as a forest lifestyle evolved into a design-driven practice—with the same respect for trees, time, and materials at its core. Dry Fall today is a bridge between generations of makers and a new wave of ecological craftsmanship.
